Protect the people
who matter most.
Life insurance can provide financial support for the people you leave behind.
Whether you want to help protect your family, cover a mortgage or leave a financial gift, Swan Protect can help you understand your options and find cover suited to your circumstances.
What is life insurance?
Life insurance is a policy designed to pay an agreed cash sum if the person covered dies during the policy term, subject to the policy's terms and conditions.
Financial support for your family
The payment is generally made as a lump sum, although some policies may provide a regular income instead. The money could help your family manage expenses such as:
- Mortgage or rent payments
- Household bills and everyday living costs
- Childcare and education
- Loans and other financial commitments
- Funeral expenses
- Leaving money to children or other beneficiaries
Why consider life insurance?
Your income and contribution to the household may be more important than you realise.
Life insurance may be worth considering where:
The amount and type of cover you need will depend on your personal circumstances, financial commitments and budget.
Types of life insurance
We can help you compare different structures to find the one that best suits your goals and budget.
Level term
life insurance
Provides a fixed amount of cover for an agreed period. The amount insured normally remains the same throughout the policy term.
Suitable for:
Providing a fixed financial amount, covering an interest-only mortgage, or leaving a gift.
Decreasing term
life insurance
With decreasing term insurance, the amount of cover reduces over time. It is commonly considered alongside a repayment mortgage.
Suitable for:
Helping to clear a debt that reduces over time, such as a standard repayment mortgage.
Whole-of-life
insurance
Intended to remain in place for the rest of your life, provided the required premiums continue to be paid and the policy conditions are met.
Important Note:
Because it is designed to pay out whenever death occurs, premiums can be higher than for term insurance.
Family income
benefit
Designed to pay a regular income for the remaining policy term if the person insured dies during that term, rather than a single lump sum.
Suitable for:
Helping to replace part of a lost salary and support ongoing monthly household expenses.
Additional protection
options
Depending on the insurer and the policy, you may be able to add extra benefits to strengthen your safety net.
Critical illness cover
Critical illness cover may pay an agreed amount if the person insured is diagnosed with a medical condition covered by the policy and meets the insurer's definition. Covered conditions and definitions vary between insurers. Not every illness, diagnosis or level of severity will be covered.
Critical illness cover can sometimes be added to life insurance or arranged as a separate policy.
Terminal illness benefit
Some life insurance policies include terminal illness benefit. This may allow the life insurance amount to be paid early where the insured person meets the insurer's definition of terminal illness.
Definitions, exclusions and applicable time limits vary between policies. Terminal illness benefit is not the same as critical illness cover.
Waiver of premium
Waiver of premium may cover future policy premiums where the insured person becomes unable to work due to an eligible illness or disability.
A waiting period, medical definition and other policy conditions will usually apply.
How much life insurance might you need?
There is no single amount that is right for everyone. When considering the level of cover, it may be helpful to review your specific financial commitments.
Your cover should be affordable for the full policy term. A policy may end if premiums are not maintained.
It may be helpful to review:
What affects the cost of
life insurance?
Life insurance premiums are usually based on several factors, which may include:
Application accuracy matters
You must answer application questions honestly and accurately.
Incorrect or incomplete information could affect the insurer's decision or result in a future claim being reduced or declined.

Frequently Asked
Questions
Find answers to common questions about securing life insurance for you and your family.
Need personal advice?
Speak directly to a protection specialist.
Do I need life insurance?
Life insurance is not compulsory in most circumstances. It may, however, be valuable where another person would experience financial difficulty following your death. Consider who depends on you, which expenses would continue and what savings or workplace benefits would already be available.
Can I take out life insurance if I have a medical condition?
Having a medical condition does not automatically mean you cannot obtain life insurance. The insurer may request further information, contact your GP with your permission, apply special terms, charge a higher premium or decline the application. Every insurer has its own underwriting criteria.
Can smokers get life insurance?
Yes, although premiums are commonly higher for smokers and users of certain nicotine products. Insurers may ask about cigarettes, cigars, vaping and other nicotine use. You should answer according to the wording of the insurer's questions.
Will I need a medical examination?
Many applications can be assessed using the information provided in the application. Depending on your age, health, occupation and the amount of cover requested, the insurer may ask for a medical report, nurse screening or medical examination.
Does life insurance always pay out?
Claims are assessed against the terms and conditions of the policy. A claim may not be paid where, for example:
- The policy has ended
- Required premiums have not been maintained
- The event is excluded by the policy
- Material application information was inaccurate or incomplete
- The claim does not meet the relevant policy definition
You should read the policy documents carefully before proceeding.
Can I change my policy later?
Some policies may allow changes, but an increase in cover or extension of the term could require a new application and further underwriting. Changes in your age or health could affect the terms available. Speak to the insurer or adviser before cancelling an existing policy.
Should my policy be placed in trust?
A life insurance policy may sometimes be placed in trust so that the policy proceeds can be managed for the intended beneficiaries. Trusts can have legal and tax implications. Swan Protect does not provide legal or tax advice, and you may need to obtain specialist advice before deciding whether a trust is appropriate.
Can I cancel my life insurance?
Policies normally provide a cancellation period after the cover begins. Details of the cancellation rights, deadlines and any refund entitlement will be set out in the policy documents. After the cancellation period, you can generally stop the policy, but you may not receive a refund and the cover will end.
Important information
- Life insurance policies have terms, conditions, exclusions and eligibility requirements. Cover and premiums depend on individual circumstances and insurer underwriting.
- A life insurance policy has no cash-in value unless the specific policy documents state otherwise. If premiums are not maintained, the policy and its cover may end.
- Do not cancel an existing insurance policy until any replacement policy has been accepted, has commenced and you are satisfied with its terms.
- Swan Protect does not provide legal, accounting, investment or tax advice.
